Renney Rebounds!

Congratulations to Tom Renney on being named Head Coach of the Edmonton Oilers. 

I don’t understand all of the ramifications of Pat Quinn being “bumped up” to the Oilers Front Office and have no particular thoughts on the subject. Suffice it to say that after the raw deal Tom Renney got with the Rangers (Glenn Sather), it’s nice to see him return as the head coach of a great franchise like Edmonton.

Tom is living proof that Leo Durocher was wrong. Nice guys don’t always finish last. The last time I had a smile on my face all day about hockey was when the Rangers signed Brendan Shanahan. Tom will always be beloved by fans here in New York. His accomplishments with the Rangers won’t soon be forgotten.

Good Luck to Tom and the Oil. Can’t wait to see them at the Garden on November 14th.

Congratulations Blackhawks and Flyers

Congratulations to the Chicago BlackHawks on their Stanley Cup victory. It’s nice to see a fabled franchise come back to life. To put it into perspective, the last time the BlackHawks won the Cup, Mark Messier was an infant.

While I am happy to see the Cup go to an Original Six team, I also congratulate the Philadelphia Flyers on an amazing performance this post season. I don’t understand all the vitriol among Ranger fans regarding the Flyer’s run. 

The Broad Street Bully days are long behind the Flyers and the Penguins, Devils and Islanders are more a natural enemy to the Rangers then the Flyers. Maybe those Ranger fans are envious that the Flyers have a decent management and coaching staff  in  place?

Whatever. Both teams deserve congratulations on their post season runs. Time for me to concentrate on the Mets. Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Sather Speaks = SOS

Apparently Larry Brooks has gotten Glen Sather to speak about the past season and the future of the franchise. I can’t tell if it’s SOS, the international distress  signal or the same old sh*t. Actually, I guess it could be viewed as both.

Sound bites like this would lead any Ranger fan to think it’s a distress signal, an SOS.

Glen Sather: 

“We just weren’t quite good enough over the course of the season. But if we had won that final game, would we have been tough enough to compete in the playoffs the way the Flyers have? Could we be where they are now? I think so.”

If this man thinks the Rangers would have gotten out of the first round against the Caps, he truly is not only in distress, he’s delusional. The only thing he said in that quote that makes any sense is that“the Rangers weren’t good enough over the course of the season”.

And in the same old sh*t Department, Sather had this to say:

“We have to get better,” Sather acknowledged. “And the way we’re going to get better is by staying within our organization and giving our prospects the time to grow and the opportunity to play in New York. “

“This has been a long process, and it’s ongoing, but as we go into this summer, our plan is to keep our own players. I can tell you one thing — we are certainly not going to overpay for free agents. If we can improve with a signing that makes sense, we’ll look into it, but we want to give our guys the first shot.”

Hello! Earth to Sather! Earth to Sather! You’ve been saying this since after the lockout and yet you’ve continued to suppress the prospects and make terrible free agent signings. How many times can you cry Wolf (pack)? Pardon the pun. I couldn’t resist.

Sather goes on to say that he must get Mark Staal and Dan Gerardi resigned. Thank you, Captain Obvious. He also goes on to say that he has told Donald Brashear that he is history with the Rangers (Brashear departs with a $1.4 million dollar golden handshake and leaves the Rangers with a cap hit that would be enough to resign a Vinnie Prospal or Jody Shelley.) There was no mention of waiving the biggest mistake of his tenure, $7 million dollar man Wade Redden, to free up cap space.

Finally Sather had this to say:

“But we’re looking forward. And we’re excited about it. We’re building an organization where we’re going to have serious competition for jobs at training camp. There are 23 spots and they’re going to the best 23.”

“A player’s contract isn’t going to get him a spot on the team if he doesn’t earn it, and that goes for everyone. Everyone is fighting for a job. They all know that. If they don’t, they should.”

People dislike Sather because he isn’t forthcoming enough to the press or the fan base. After reading this latest interview by Brooks, Sather should maintain his silence rather then continuing to spew the same kool aid season after season.

We all know Sather will never be fired. That doesn’t mean Ranger fans should continue to swallow the same old sh*t season after season.  The only future Ranger fans have to look forward to is one where Glen Sather is out of the picture. That should be the Ranger’s blueprint  for the future.
